About George Simonson
George Simonson is a writer, painter, photographer and Buddhist meditator who lives in Harpswell, Maine. He was born in Connecticut in 1953 and has been married since 1978 to Mary Katherine Brennan, a science editor, print maker and book artist. They met at Yale, where George trained as a composer, and Mary as a cell biologist. After many years in New York City, they now enjoy life and business (see Red Squirrel Studio and Right Communications) in Maine, in an 1840s farmhouse by the sea.

Ballard High School graduate, Class ’41 (news report)
Egil Smedvig was born in Norway, 1922, and emigrated with his parents to the USA in 1925. He graduated from Ballard High School in 1941; served in the US Army Band as a composer, performer, and music arranger during WW II. After the war he studied music at the Juilliard School in NY, and later received a BA and MA from the University of Washington followed by a year of further graduate studies at Mills College with Darius Milhaud. His teaching positions included thirty-two years with the Seattle Public schools as an instrumental music director including a number of years at Lincoln High School (1950-57)—where he received the Golden Acorn Teaching Award and was responsible for outstanding music groups. In addition to teaching he was also active as a professional performer and conductor of his own dance band and other music groups. He is still an active ASCAP & BMG Composer and Arranger with many music publications to his credit. He was married for 46 years to the late Kristin Jonsson Smedvig (Ballard Grd.’39) who also taught school and was a violinist in the Seattle Symphony. Their three children have distinguished themselves in both music and teaching.
